Leadership or more hands?

Most companies ask for more output when the real gap is ownership. Some ask for a leader when the plan is fine and the team is just stretched. Here's how to tell.

Fractional CMO or more execution? How to tell which you need

Two different problems that look the same

From the CEO's chair, both problems feel identical: pipeline is thin and marketing seems busy. But one company is missing a person who decides what marketing is for. The other has that person and simply can't get the work out the door.

Buy execution when you need leadership and you get more activity pointed in no particular direction. Buy leadership when you need execution and you get a good plan nobody has time to run.

Signs you need a leader

You likely need senior ownership if most of these sound familiar:

  • Nobody can say in one sentence who you sell to and why they pick you.
  • Sales and marketing disagree on what a good lead is.
  • The marketing plan is a list of tactics, not a set of priorities.
  • The board asks about pipeline and nobody owns the answer.
  • Your last two marketing hires didn't last a year.

Signs you need more execution

You likely need execution capacity if these sound closer:

  • You have a marketing leader with a clear plan and a backlog.
  • Campaigns slip because one person is doing five jobs.
  • Content, web and ops work is scoped but not shipped.
  • The strategy is sound; the calendar is the problem.

When it's both

Plenty of companies need both: someone to set direction and someone to do the work. That's normal for a business between founder-led sales and a full marketing team. The mistake is hiring a junior marketer and hoping they'll grow into the strategy role on the job.

If you're unsure, start with a short diagnostic. It's cheaper to find out than to guess wrong for a year.

The short version

Ask who decides what marketing is for. If nobody does, you need leadership first. If someone does and they're buried, you need hands.
